NEW: Reverently and Meekly Now

Arranging a favorite or popular hymn can be a daunting proposition.  A lot of emotion and history can be invested in these marvelous musical works and the risk of “ruining” a hymn for someone seems so high.

I’ve always loved this favorite sacrament hymn, partly because it has the highest tenor note of any hymn in the book: a G. But in that same section I haven’t been a fan of letting the basses sit silent, excluded from half of that sacred expression: “I have ransomed even thee.”

The Iron Rod now available

I am excited to announce that the fourth movement of “The Restoration,” called “The Iron Rod”, is now available.  This movement begins the second act of this four-act work about the life of Joseph Smith. It highlights his first major act of restoration: the translation of the Book of Mormon.  This movement is an arrangement of the popular hymn by the same name from the hymnal of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

BUNDLE: Act 4 of “The Restoration” now available

I am happy to announce the availability of another bundle from “The Restoration”.  Act 4 covers the final days of the prophet Joseph Smith’s life, up to and including his martyrdom.  This bundle contains two of my favorite movements from this work, “Carthage” and “Praise to the Man.”

This bundle is offered at a 33% discount over purchasing the included movements separately.

One more act to go, then the whole of “The Restoration” will be available, both as separate movements and various bundles.  Stay tuned.

Pricing and licensing of purchased works

When I started putting together this site I thought a lot about how to price and license works that I wanted to make available here.  I had a pretty good understanding of how choral scores are typically sold, at a relatively low price but with the requirement of purchasing one copy per singer.  But I really had no concept of how orchestral scores were priced or licensed.

I write these works for my own satisfaction and learning, but I publish them in the hope that they will be performed.  So it makes sense to make purchasing licenses for an appropriate ensemble as attractive as possible.

Four Levels of Singing

Some time ago I was introduced to an article written by a fellow named Clayne Robison. I sing with Clayne in the Utah location of Millennial Choirs and Orchestras. He has nurtured a life-long career studying the mechanics of “beautiful singing,” and MCO is fortunate to have him around to help us reach a higher standard.

The article Clayne wrote is a deeply personal account of experiences he had while trying to reconcile his desire for artistic flair and perfection with the counsel of his church leaders to let the Lord direct his hand (or voice) when presenting sacred music. I can’t really do the article justice here, other than to summarize that it describes four qualitative levels of singing that have nothing to do with technical merit or artistry. It’s worth a read by anyone who loves singing sacred works.
